That was fine, Piccolo had made sure to train Gohan to fight in any situation. It was unorthodox, sure... but with his hand pressed to the ground, pinning the broom, it didn't take much for Gohan to use his hand like a leg, and keeping him supported while he kept the other brooms at bay.
